The cheque was handed over to the Pimville based Kasi Hero Foundation at the Pimville Zone 9 informal settlement where the Kasi Hero Foundation runs its daily soup kitchen for underprivileged children. The team includes volunteers from the community who dedicate time each day to cook meals for children. The team has also opened an aerobics class for elderly residents and a daycare centre.

The Collen Mashawana Foundation, which has also made great efforts to help the underprivileged around South Africa, threw its support behind the Kasi Hero team as a means to empower young people and encourage the team to continue their work. This was according to foundation Chairman, Collen Mashawana.

“We met a foundation that is truly helping its community. We found out they feed more than 200 people a day. They have a daycare centre that looks after more than 20 kids who come from families that do not afford better schools. We also found out that the kids are looked after by people that do not get any salary, the meals are donated by the public. That’s what inspired us to assist going forward,” said Mashawana.

One of those volunteers is Pimville resident Stella Sitho.
“I was touched when I saw them cooking in their first week. I asked to join them because I am also unemployed. I started and have fallen in love with taking care of these kids. Even though we have been doing it for free, when you love something you sacrifice your time. We are overwhelmed by the love and support shown by the Collen Mashawana Foundation. We are very happy. As a team, we feel blessed, we are emotional at the moment. We hope the Mashawana team grows from strength to strength,” Sitho said.

Along with the cheque, the Collen Mashawana Foundation brought along toys, blankets, clothes and stationery for the kids who attend the daycare centre.
