Among them was one scoutmaster and community leader Joe Mawela who has played an integral part in the development of Pimville. Among his many feats, Mawela was one of the residents who petitioned the department of Constitutional Development that led to the construction of the Pimville Community Centre and the local Post Office. Mawela’s influence extended outside of Pimville as well, he also co-founded the soccer team, Mofolo Dynamos.

The honouring event was organised by MTHM (Making Things Happen Movement) and received support from Ward 22 Councilor Lizzy Mabasa as well as local businesses. The event saw performances from Pimville’s Boys & Girls Club marimba band and the Maleke Brass Band among others. Various community leaders also gave speeches at the event- adding a nostalgic feel as the community took a trip down memory lane.

Reflecting on the day, 90-year-old Mawela said he was grateful to the community for organising the event.

“I appreciate the Pimville community’s staging of Saturday’s celebration in recognition of the endeavours I undertook towards the neighbourhood’s upliftment. What I’ve done was merely to oblige, as a scoutmaster, scout promises entail to do my duty to God and my country,” the 90-year-old said.
