Ward 26 residents pray for better days

They prayed mainly for GBV to end, employment and school exams.

Residents of Diepkloof Ward 26 including children and senior citizens had recently gathered once again at the Extreme Park, but this time, not for a protest or community meeting. In a spiritual candle lighting evening, residents from different religions gathered for one goal, to pray for a better Diepkloof. Gender-based violence (GBV) has been a nightmare in Soweto and South Africa as whole, these residents prayed for all the killings to end.

Previously, we have covered these very same residents as they fought for 70% employment from local businesses, one of the reasons for this prayer session was to pray for jobs. Learners have final exams approaching and they were prayed for during this candle lighting ceremony. In a nutshell, the candle lighting was to pray for the success of every individual in the community.

It attracted people from other parts of Soweto when it was announced on a loudspeaker at the Extreme Park the day before. Some came from as far as Protea Glen, Dobsonville, Jabulani to join

Ward 26 residents in prayer. Although all these issues were there before COVID-19, the pandemic might have worsened most of them. Ward 26 residents particularly are on a job-hunting spree hence they are on a mission to demand 70% employment from local businesses and companies. According to Mbali Radebe, a young activist from Zone 2, they have had some successes, as some residents found employment and they are praying for more to find employment.
