Calm restored at hostel

Protesters on a break, for now.

Reverend Frederick Modise Road has been calm for the past week.

This comes after residents at Meadowlands Hostel went on a service delivery protest that ended with one person being shot dead.

The protests turned chaotic and went on for days, the busy road was barricaded and the influx of cars going into the other areas in Soweto had to seek alternative routes.

Foreign nationals’ spaza shops were vandalised by what other protesters was a result of misguided anger for other residents.

Residents had promised not to stop until their requests of a better living environment had been met.

Proper functioning toilets, better housing and recreational facilities are some of the requests by the protesters.

Their requests have not been met but the protesters have retreated for now.
