Eldorado Park bids farewell to Station Commander Brigadier van Dyk

A heartfelt memorial hosted in honour of the station commander who served a total of 35 years in the SAPS.

The Eldorado Park SAPS along with community leaders had a memorial service in honour of the late station commander Brigadier Peter van Dyk.

Residents, community stakeholders, other brigadiers, Major General Max Masha, and the van Dyk family were present at what was called a ‘drive by memorial’ in Eldorado Park extension 5 in front of the Eldorado Park police station.

Ward Cllr Peter Rafferty said in his tribute: “I think it’s fair to say that outside of the van Dyk family, he has made family here in Eldorado Park too. When the news broke, I put up a post on Facebook because people always want to put up negative things. He was very dedicated in his work and even on his off days he will never say don’t call me, he will listen and assist where he could. Our deepest condolences to the van Dyk family, your loss is our loss. We are going to miss him and the unique relationship that we’ve created over the years.”

The community policing forum public relations officer: Dominique Palmer shared that Brigadier van Dyk was not just a station commander but a father to many. He thanked the family for allowing the community of Eldorado Park to share him with them. “He was a people’s person, and he was by far the most affluent people who lived and served,” he said.

Chairperson of the Eldorado Park Local Dug Action Committee, Cheryl Pillay described the brigadier as a man with a special character.

There were many who shared their tributes including the MMC of Community Development; Margaret Arnolds. It was a very emotional day for many and for those who could not attend, the memorial was live streamed on Facebook.
