Pimville radio star gets award nomination

While she is now well-versed in the art of radio presenting, getting a foot in the door was not easy.

Pimville resident and radio personality, JennyLove has been nominated for the Best Radio Presenter award in the 2021 Golden Arts & Media Awards (GAMA).   The 25-year-old can be heard on the airwaves of Sounds of Azania and said she was surprised but grateful to receive the nod. “I didn’t expect it at all but I am grateful. For me, it is a sign that I am on track in terms of my career and that as Azania we are on track in terms of our growth. I’m very proud to be nominated,” she said.   Jennifer Mdluli, known as JennyLove is currently a Presenter and Programmes Manager at the station. She has been there since late 2019 and she considers herself privileged to be part of the team. “I’ve had the absolute best time with the station, to be honest. I get to work with a great team and do what I love.”   While she is now well-versed in the art of radio presenting, getting a foot in the door was not easy though. Despite sending many applications, Jenny had no luck and subsequently decided to register at Revolution Media Academy where she studied Radio Production. That same year, amid exams, she finally got the text she had been waiting for.   “You know, I speak about alignment and things happening at a specific time. I had been applying for a very long time and had even almost given up. I even decided to go to school and get a qualification because I thought maybe that would improve my chances. But then in October 2019, I got the message from Sounds of Azania that they wanted me to come over. It was incredible,” she recalled.   She then had the task of juggling school and her newfound role.

“It was difficult but I could never complain about that because it’s something that I had chased for so long. So I was grateful and am still grateful to be here,” she said.

For those trying to start out in the field of radio broadcasting, Jenny shared some advice. “You have to be very passionate first of all. You have to know why you want to go into radio, then do your research – what type of programmes do you want to be part of, what are your strong points. Check online podcasts and online radio, that’s a big field right now with everything going digital,” she explained.   When she’s not presenting, Jenny is a writer for KeepHumble. On her plans for the future though, she said she was looking forward to growing with Sounds of Azania. “We are just going to keep working hard. I want to grow and take Azania to greater heights,” she said.   Voting lines for the GAMA Awards will close on September 30. To vote for JennyLove SMS GAMA 849 to 47439
