Hunt on for Meadowlands traditional healer suspected of rape

The Soweto Parliament teamed up with the SAPS on Friday in a raid at what is believed to be a fake Gobela training centre in Meadowlands.

The Soweto Parliament teamed up with the SAPS on Friday in a raid at what is believed to be a fake Gobela training centre in Meadowlands. Soweto Parliament said they had received a complaint from parents of a child who claimed that their child had been sexually abused by her trainer while training to be a traditional healer.

The team said the 14-year-old teenager managed to escape and reported the matter to her parents. A case was opened at the Dobsonville Police Station before the child was taken to Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital for medical care and tests.

It was there that it was discovered that she was pregnant. The ambush to the house, however, yielded few results as the 56-year-old suspect was not found at the bogus centre.

The parents of four other girls who were also in training were called and asked to come and fetch their children for safety reasons. Nhlanhla Lux of Soweto Parliament said he believed the suspect was tipped had been made aware of the pending arrest.

“Unfortunately, the suspect was not around we arrived along with the police, we believe he was tipped. On a positive note, the girls who were also found here have been fetched by their parents while this case is being investigated. The next step is to follow the law. It is not for us to freestyle and say we will do this or that. We have to follow the police and work within the boundaries of the law,” he said.
