Meet women in Engineering, Sandile Gladness Ngomane and Zinhle Obedience Ndlazi

The love of mathematics, physics, and problem-solving saw both women going into the demanding field of electrical engineering.

International Women in Engineering Day (INWED) is an international awareness campaign that is celebrated annually on June 23. The day celebrates the work and achievements of women engineers. It was first launched in the United Kingdom (UK) by the Women’s Engineering Society (WES) as a national initiative.

ABB Electrification is proud of their two women engineers Sandile Gladness Ngomane and Zinhle Obedience Ndlazi. They are believed to be a testament to the principles behind INWED.

The love of mathematics, physics, and problem-solving saw both women going into the demanding field of electrical engineering. “I enjoy the challenge of hunting down what is wrong and a finding solution,” Ndlazi said.

Ngomane is a test engineer in the test department at ABB Electrification, she works on the switchgear side (both primary and secondary and Ndlazi assists with undertaking the functional testing of high-voltage electrical protection systems and also carries out panel wiring.

“My biggest achievement has been to see myself graduate as an electrical engineer and to get to work with different customers from different companies. Being able to handle a project all on my own and resolve any problems that may arise is both a challenge and an enormously satisfying achievement,” said Ngomane.

She further adds that being a young woman in engineering can be challenging at times because she is in the minority and in a male-dominated field, where you need confidence. After all, you do get excluded and are made to feel that you do not fit in or belong.

Ndlazi mentions that her biggest achievement to date is completing her electrical course and graduating in the face of adversity such as limited financial support from her family, which resulted in her working part-time while pursuing her dream. “This taught me to value and to stay focused on my goals,” she said.

Both the women are doing exceptionally well in the field of electrical engineering and in their duties within it.

“I believe that, as women, we are powerful and capable of doing anything. If engineering is what you want to pursue as a career, I advise that you give it your all,” concluded Ngomane.

Ndlazi concluded by saying the sky is the limit, never doubt yourself, stay focused, follow your dream and never let anything or anyone slow or stop you from achieving your goals or making your dreams come true just because you are a woman.
