Small fire at Bara laundry had no impact on laundry services

The affected area included a small laundry storeroom and unfortunately, a portion of the laundry was burnt.

On Sunday, June 20, it was reported that a small fire broke out in one of the back offices of the laundry area of the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital.

The affected area included a small laundry storeroom and unfortunately, a portion of the laundry was burnt. These include draw sheets, doctors’ trousers, shirts, towels, yellow table cloths, and a few linen trolleys. One of the supervisors’ offices was also damaged.

The actual cause of the fire is not yet known, however, in a statement the Department of Health said according to preliminary investigations, a heater was found in the back office where the fire is assumed to have started.

The department went on to say that further investigations will be done by the relevant authorities to ascertain the actual cause of the fire.

According to reports, the fire was contained by the hospital team who was onsite, using fire extinguishers. The City of Johannesburg’s fire department was also called to assess the situation and confirmed that the fire was completely extinguished.

The department said that the fire has not impacted clinical and laundry services in the facility and as a result, laundry services are running as normal at the hospital.
