Crime remains a nightmare in our townships and the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, unfortunately, it has gotten worse. To combat crime the South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) Zone 10 will be hosting a Safety and Security two-day summit at the Diepkloof Welfare Centre on Thursday, June 17 and Friday, June 18.

Diepkloof, Orlando, Noordgesig, Nomzamo, and Pennyville residents are invited, however, due to COVID-19 regulations, the meeting can only accommodate 100 people. Some of the key issues to be discussed at the summit are, statutory rape and Gender-Based Violence (GBV), crime prevention, and service delivery.

“The summit also seeks to provide a platform to discuss the strength, weakness, opportunities, and threats involved in the sustainability of safety and security in these areas: Diepkloof, Orlando, Noordgesig, Pennyville, and Nomzamo to build a safer and healthy environment,” said Thabo Nkhasi, SANCO project coordinator.

“We anticipate bringing together a range of senior executives, relevant government departments, academics, professionals, and key decision-makers to understand the deep challenges faced by the community and businesses.

The key outcome objective we aim to achieve is to develop a coordinated strategy and programmes to be implanted, that will turn to enable the community, business and government to coordinate efforts to fight crime,” Nkhasi added. SANCO says, ‘crime prevention should no longer be a concern of the police but a societal challenge requiring a collaboration.
