Delrado Primary School learners recieved food hampers

Learners at Delrado Primary School in Eldorado Park received food hampers from Feed the Nation Foundation as the organisation continues to provide much-needed assistance to child-headed households around the country.

Learners at Delrado Primary School in Eldorado Park received food hampers from Feed the Nation Foundation as the organisation continues to provide much-needed assistance to child-headed households around the country.

According to the statement by foundation, most learners at Delrado Primary live in the nearby informal settlement, and nearly all are dependent on the school feeding scheme for their main, and sometimes only, meal for the day.

When Feed the Nation delivered food hampers to the school last year, it was noted that many of the learners didn’t have school shoes. The local Pick n Pay was notified and delivered the shoes along with the food hampers to the excited learners.

“Thank you to Feed the Nation Foundation for all they have done for this community. This has brought smiles and many thankful hearts to our learners and their families,” said Delrado Primary educator, Lorna Solomons.

Other schools in the area that received food assistance earlier in May include, McBain Charles Primary School (also in Eldorado Park), Mohato School for Autism in Motingtinyane Street, Rebongwe Primary school in Meadowlands West; and Ithembalihle Primary School and Enkolweni Primary School, both in Dobsonville.

A child-headed household often has a living parent or guardian but is without parental care or income, which means the child is forced to assume the parental role of supporting the household.
Suzanne Ackerman-Berman, transformation director at Pick ‘n Pay and trustee of Feed the Nation Foundation, said that the need to support vulnerable families is greater now than ever, as communities are faced with the economic aftermath of the pandemic.

“There are many instances where teenagers are running a home while still attending school or working,” she said. “We’ve even come across incidents where children as young as nine are having to support a four-year-old sibling,” added Ackerman-Berman.

Each food hamper is said to be valued at over R500 and comprises essential grocery items such as maize meal, rice, soup mix, flour, soya mince, cooking oil, salt and soap, and fresh vegetables. It is expected to provide food support for a family of four for up to one month.

In what started as the Feed the Nation campaign, Feed the Nation Foundation has provided over 30 million meals in the form of food hampers to date, in partnership with funders, Pick n Pay customers, suppliers, and welfare organisations. This collective effort has not only helped feed school children, shelters, aged-care facilities, orphanages, and other vulnerable communities has also benefited during what has become an ongoing crisis.

It has been shared that by the end of this round of deliveries, the third initiative over the past year to provide food assistance to child-headed households, over 15 000 families nationally will have received food hampers, amounting to a total value of more than R8 million.

“We continue to urge customers to join us in feeding the nation. A donation of just R21 at till points at our Boxer and Pick n Pay stores will help feed someone one meal a day for a week,” concluded Ackerman-Berman.
