Sizwe Feeding Scheme fights poverty one spoon at a time

Feeding scheme in Kliptown struggles to feed as numbers increase of hungry residents

The Sizwe Feeding Scheme in Kliptown which was started in 2012 by Anne Frans is still feeding the hungry in the community despite the many challenges.

Frans shared that the organisation feeds many residents in the community and sometimes the numbers can increase to 300 residents a day. The feeding scheme distributes three times a week with residents bringing their containers.

The feeding scheme is not funded by the Department of Social Development and admits that it’s been very stressful during the Covid-19 pandemic as numbers have drastically increased.

“Some people eat on those days that we feed and then skip a day of eating because they do not have food at home. Poverty is very high in our community. Two weeks ago, one child was running to the feeding scheme and we just started distributing the food when she fainted. This was very sad for me, when we gave her water, she was okay but she was so hungry. Parents are unemployed and they can’t afford the food, children grow up to robbing people, not because they want to but it’s because they just want to feed themselves.”

The Sizwe Feeding Scheme needs sponsors and would like to ask for help from residents and businesses who can assist them.

Frans’ would like to thank Shabnam Carim, Meals on Wheels, and Mohammed Patson Patel from the Alhooda Foundation who assist them every week.

You can follow the feeding scheme on Facebook under Sizwe feeding scheme and you can contact Anne Frans on 074 423 0936 if you are interested in visiting the feeding scheme and possibly assisting with food items, or gas for their stoves.
