NBI with the City of Joburg to launch the Soweto Clinics Maintenance Project

Opportunites to be opened for young Sowetans.

The National Business Institute (NBI) has teamed up with the Gauteng government and the City of Joburg to launch the Soweto Clinics Maintenance Project.

“The idea behind this was to find a way we can support the government in providing facilities and maintenance, but while we do that, can we also develop township enterprises and provide opportunities for young people to gain valuable skills?” said Bernard Ngosi, the NBI’s Technical Adviser.

Ngosi was addressing business owners who gathered at the Jabulani Civic Centre on Thursday. The consultation was to help business owners get a better understanding of the newly launched Soweto Clinics Maintenance Project. The initiative seeks to empower township-based businesses with the opportunity to provide maintenance work at selected clinics around Soweto While no documents were submitted in the application process, businesses will have to meet certain criteria to qualify for consideration. The selected businesses will be given access to resources that will help them execute the work to the required standard.

A key part of the project is that the businesses selected have to be willing to absorb young people.

This was confirmed by Samela Nonxuba, Project Manager at Tushiya – one of the companies funding the initiative. “Most businesses have to be willing and will be required to absorb some learners where possible. We want a continuation of the established relationship. There will be learners who will be participating in the pilot project, but we don’t want that relationship to end, so that’s why we want to create opportunities so that when this project ends we have other projects that you can continue on and still be able to employ the learners you would have absorbed,” she said. Applications for business owners to submit their applications closed on April 19 and the selected businesses are expected to be informed in due course.
