Residents called to Lakeview Park clean up

The deserted space has become infested with rats and pollution, hazardous to those who leave nearby the park.

Residents of Lakeview have called on community members to come to a clean-up campaign of what used to be a recreational park in the area. The deserted space has become infested with rats and pollution, dangerous to those who leave nearby the park.

Leading the clean-up is Lakeview resident, Dan Sihlangu.
“This park is a big part of the history of Soweto. As a community we want to see it back to what it used to be; a place that we can all be proud of, where our kids can come to play, and where residents can feel safe,” Sihlangu said.

The community members have had to fend off attacks from land grabbers who have attempted to build unauthorised houses at the park, as well as those who cut down the trees.

“We have also had a problem of people trying to build unofficial housing on the park. They would never try that at Thokoza Park because it is well maintained and looks like a park. Ours just looks like an abandoned space and that’s why it is so important that we do this cleanup,” he added.

The clean-up is scheduled for April 27 at 9 am at Lakeview Park with covid protocols observed. Rhandzu Mthombeni, one of the organisers of the clean-up encouraged people to come out in their numbers.

“People feel like one person won’t make a difference and that’s what we need to change. Each person has to take it upon themselves to be part of the solution. Our children don’t have a place to play here because they are scared of snakes or rats and anything else that might be in this rubble. We are calling on everyone to join in,” Mthombeni said.

Pikitup is expected to join in on the clean-up and residents have been advised to bring garden tools and protective wear on the day. For more information, get in touch with Rhandzu Mthombeni on 078 868 0993.
