Eldorado Park Proper Swimming pool in ruins

The City of Johannesburg (COJ) is pleading with residents of Eldorado Park to assist in a fight against theft and vandalism.

The City of Johannesburg (COJ) is pleading with residents of Eldorado Park to assist in a fight against theft and vandalism.

This follows several visits by the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Community Development Cllr Margret Arnolds to the Eldorado Park Proper Swimming Pool in Extension 8.

Last month the MMC held a meeting with the COJ officials from the Department of Sports and Recreation, the Eldorado Park swimming pool caretaker, the ward councilor, and the business fraternity from the community.

According to what the MMC posted on social, this meeting was held to find a solution to the rampant theft and vandalism at the swimming pool including other facilities in the area.

In late November last year, the MMC also went with different officials to inspect the situation and found that the security personnel was being overpowered by criminal elements from the community who have turned themselves into vandals who continue to steal valuable electrical cables and steel items, breaking all glazing and attempting to remove metal roof sheets.

The Sport and Recreation officials indicated that the vandals beat and chased security guards who were placed at this facility. The City of Johannesburg loses millions of rand a year to vandalism and theft of infrastructure and assets, hampering service delivery and more often than not, putting people’s lives at risk.

The office at the swimming pool is completely vandalised.

Following last month’s visit to the swimming pool, the MMC said, “I’m encouraged that everyone has agreed to put politics aside and to look at how the facilities in the community can be safeguarded from criminal elements. These facilities are meant to serve as a recreational and safe space for the community’s youth. We also need more residents to participate in our initiative. #friendsoffacilities.”

The City would like to urge residents to report acts of theft and vandalism of infrastructure to law enforcement authorities for the perpetrators to be brought to book.
