Nomkhosi Msomi(45) a rape survivor advocates for change

Msomi’s experience made her strong and bold to the extent that she decided to be a motivational speaker to empower people who have been abused.

Nomkhosi Msomi, a 45-year -old, Soweto born motivational speaker is an abuse survivor who has been through a lot of hardships in her life. 

‘’It took me 30 years before I could narrate my story to the next person, looking at how GBV was taking a toll rise, I decided to come out of the closet and speak out, to help people who are in abusive relationships know that there is always a way out no matter how difficult it may look or seem, I started speaking out at church, then funerals, schools, and events”, Said Msomi.

“My purpose is to warn women not to stay in abusive relationships, if you can see the signs, run for your life before it is too late, all this abuse starts verbally then escalates to physical which some of our sister’s don’t survive and unfortunately leave in coffins.

“I was once raped by my husband who then sprayed me with pepper spray, and because we are taught that ‘emshadwen kuya bekezwela’ I stayed until I realized that the heat was getting hotter by day and enough was too much”, she explained. ‘’The abuse led to anger which had me arrested three times’’, she added.

Msomi’s experience made her strong and bold to the extent that she decided to be a motivational speaker to empower people who have been abused. She focuses more on HIV/AIDS talks, GBV, and children with special needs. Msomi is pleading with the community to help her with at least a tablet or a laptop which she can use to diarize her meetings and write down her speeches and so forth.
