Gauteng teams clash at a one-day tournament in Mapetla

Bad weather conditions threatened to disrupt the tournament but after a 30 minute break and clearer skies, the players were raring to get back on the pitch.

Six teams battled it out for 1st place prizes in a mini-league one-day tournament held in Mapetla. The tournament was part of the G and Q Project’s effort to develop sports in the area, and the teams invited were from around the Gauteng province.

With all Covid protocols observed, the day got underway with the Netball girls under 13’s, where G and Q Netball ladies made home court advantage count, dominating all their matches, and finishing above Phiri Winter Roses and Zonke Bonke Netball, who finished 2nd and 3rd respectively.

G and Q Netball Coach Duduzile Mboyane said she was pleased with her side’s display. “They were very impressive, our preparation leading up was positive and I felt they were ready. More importantly, they enjoyed themselves and showcased their talent. It was a great team performance from them,” she said.

In the afternoon, it was slips and slides as the boys went toe-to-toe in the football leg of the tournament. Rainy weather conditions threatened to disrupt the tournament, however, after a 30-minute pause and clearer skies, the players were raring to get back on the pitch. Just as their Netball counterparts, G and Q’s footballers dominated – finishing 1st place, above Hillshavean and Alliance FC who finished 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Reflecting on the tournament, Co-founder of the G and Q Project, Mpho Machaba said he was impressed by the standard all the teams showed on the day.

“The players have not been active due to the pandemic so we expected them to be a bit slow, but they surprised us with a very competitive display. We saw the talent that we wanted to see,” he said.

Machaba also thanked the various stakeholders who made the tournament possible. “We are grateful to everyone who availed themselves to help us ensure Covid government protocols were observed. We’re also quite fortunate to have partnered up with several sponsors to help us identify and grow talent. We have big plans for 2021 and still invite sponsors who would like to get involved in this massive project we are building,” Machaba concluded.

G and Q management also recently received a prestigious nod in the form of a certificate of appreciation from Mapetla’s Councilor Gobata. The certificate was in recognition of the contribution to the development of sports in Soweto made by the G and Q Management Projects since its establishment.
