1700 meals served to the needy

After Bridgestone handed over a cheque towards Meals on Wheels at their Johannesburg Federation, the Meals bought began to be dispersed around different areas in Johannesburg including Protea Glen in Soweto.

About 1700 meals have been provided for the needy by the Cash Back Initiative, Bridgestone South Africa along with Auto Fitment center Supa Quick and its customers after raising R25 000 for their Meals on Wheels Project in Soweto.

After Bridgestone handed over a cheque towards Meals on Wheels at their Johannesburg Federation, the Meals bought began to be dispersed around different areas in Johannesburg including Protea Glen in Soweto.

Nthabiseng Mogane, Bridgestone SA Senior Brand Manager said, “As the number of the people in the country who have faced economic challenges has grown in the last few months, we saw the urgent need to contribute to those in need of food, while offering financial relief to our customers.”

A national cashback offer ran through July and September by Supa Quick and Bridgestone and saw some customers receive cash vouchers of as much as R800, where customers had the option of either keeping the cash or donating it towards meals and wheels.

Dumisane Dhlomo from Protea said that even though the initiative has not directly impacted him, he is sure it is saving many from hunger.

The Meals on Wheels Project is a volunteer organisation that delivers nourishing meals to poor communities around the country.

The Senior Corporate Communications Manager at Bridgestone SA, Vuyokazi Xapa said, “Serving society is in our DNA, we are a company dedicated to being Community conscious and relevant in every region that we are in. This initiative was important to us as it also gave our customers the chance to take part in helping the less fortunate.”

Currently, the initiative operates from more than 700 service points throughout the country, including towns and cities where these branches usually comprise well-established kitchens, while in rural areas and Squatter camps like Protea South, they use fitted container mobile kitchens delivering over 31 million meals a year.
