Matlhogonolo Community Outreach puts some lights on to guide learners
Matlhogonolo Community Outreach Centre (MCOC) held its very own South African version of the Lights on Afterschool event to raise awareness and highlight the importance of afterschool programs.
During the month of October, communities nationwide celebrate the afterschool programs that keep kids safe, inspire them to learn, and help working families. After school programs allow learners an opportunity to explore ideas, provide new experiences in a safe environment, and helps them find mutual success with project-based learning.
2020 has been a tough year, the pandemic has affected academics, putting pressure on learners and teachers as learners go back to class, and need to find effective ways to catch up.
Diepkloof based organisation, Matlhogonolo Community Outreach Centre (MCOC) held its very own South African version of the Lights on Afterschool event to raise awareness and highlight the importance of afterschool programs, #LightsOnAfterschoolSA at Dumezweni Primary School in Diepkloof Zone 1.

Based in Zone 3, the organisation specialises in assisting local schools, guiding, and tutoring learners afterschool. What makes these programs different and more exciting for learners is that they serve as both educational and fun.
One of the activities that stood out on the day was the tippy tap challenge, where learners were required to create a tap using a plastic bottle and straw, this was done to raise awareness around the COVID-19 pandemic, washing hands as well as bunting of the coloured lights on pictures they created themselves, these activities were done in line with the COVID-19 restrictions.
Founded by Prince Phetoe, the organisation aims to continue turning the aimless hours after school into productive learning time and are currently looking for dedicated people who would like to join their tutoring team.
