'I rap and trust me, the bars are proper' - Diego.
Diego van der Merwe, better known on stage as ‘Diego’ is a rapper from Eldorado Park extension 2 (Small 2). He started making and playing music back at Eldridge Primary School.
“I was probably about 12 years old. I competed in Eldo’s Got Talent while I was in primary school, but it got a lot more serious in High School. I don’t sing, I rap, and trust me, the bars are proper. I feel like I’ve been rapping for a long while now,” said Diego.
The rapper went on to share that he first found inspiration from a song by Eminem called ‘Beautiful’. “That song made me believe that I can start rapping,” he said.

After officially starting to make his own songs, the rapper also found inspiration from; Drake, Boogie, J Cole, and Tupac.
“I like what Youngsta and Nasty C are doing locally too,” he added. Last year, Diego released his EP titled ‘Home Ground’ which has six songs.
On the EP he worked with producers George Volker and Dulane Mcabe who are also from Eldorado Park. Songs on the EP features Michael Owen who is from Kliptown and Volker.
“I won’t rap about something that I haven’t been through, it’s always about something that I have experienced. Like being robbed or doing something with my friends. Sometimes my music is about something that I’m going through personally. I write everything. Writing is therapeutic for me,” said Diego.
When asked how his music has been received by fans, he explained: “The response that I got from my fans was just crazy, I didn’t expect to receive so much love. It was really nice to get that energy. I have a freestyle video up on my social media and there are about 800 views now, I would say that it has done justice.”
The first song on his EP is titled ‘Intro to his pain’ and Diego shared that in this song he actually speaks about family, friends, his girlfriend, and God.
The artist said that Eldorado Park should watch the space and that if all goes according to plan, he will be releasing a new single on September 18 which will be his first song for 2020.
