Soweto Theatre showcasing local talent this heritage month

Sun-Xa Experiment band one of the identified groups for the Lutavula Cultural Fiesta.

As we celebrate the Heritage month, Soweto theatre, renowned for its celebration of culture and lifestyle, is showcasing various traditional dance forms and talent by young dance choreographers from and outside Soweto, Latavula Cultural Fiesta, which is directed by Makhaola Ndebele.

There is so much to show and experience with our 11 official languages, a myriad of cuisine, music, and creative expressions of our historical inheritance. The 5 Groups which have been identified, fitting for this creative expression are Ubuhle Bendalo Arts Group, Ubuyambo Performing Arts, Ponga Projects, Sun Xa Experiment, and Alexandra born Lebo the Khoisan. The show will be available for live streaming on YouTube from Tuesday, September 15 until Saturday, September 26.

Being part of the identified talented groups, Sun-Xa Experiment says that their role in the music scene is vital to the masses and them as individuals as they believe that they are diverse examples of what culture is.

“Our role in the music scene is vital and important not only to the masses but to us as well, who journey the name ”Sun Xa Experiment”, we are a portal of what heritage is with our heavily influenced by culture sound and having amongst us various ethnic groups of us varying from Sesotho, isiZulu, Nguni, Xitsonga to mention a few, we are a diverse example of what culture is and how is fused to maintain our heritage.”

Established in 2014 and on its 6th year the band has grown and evolved too many circles, from an 8 piece to be 6 then 7 back to 6, it shows a journey of love and learning, touching lives through sound in many formats. They designed their sound as “Umculo Umuthi”, meaning, Music is Medicine, which is also the title of their debut album.

Led front by their lead vocalist Buyisiwe Njoko “Qhikiza” her voice commands you to listen attentively and the message speaks directly to you, backed by the rest of the band who are 5 behind her, with Shadow dancer who dances and choreographs the energy of sound as the music goes.

Inspired by the late Ndikho Xaba & Sun Ra who are both avant-garde jazz musicians, the band managed to understand the concept of “thinking out the box” through art to preserve culture and heritage.
