Men of Honor discusses ways of standing against GBV

The idea behind the Men of Honor initiative was to address the prejudices men have against women.

Hearing and seeing Gender-Based Violence (GBV) incidents take a hike in the country has caused the men from Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa (CCBSA) to act against the scourge, because its unlike men of honor to watch evil take place without doing something to halt it.

The Managing Director for CCBSA, Velaphi Ratshefola went on ahead and established the Men of Honor initiative last year so that the men from CCBSA could meet to discuss issues that really impact them and how to be better men, men of honor.

Truth is, traits of toxic patriarchy still remains in the hearts and minds of many South African men who are guilty of subtle and increasingly more aggressive attacks against women at home, at work, and in their communities.

Ratshefola explained how through Men of Honor, they define a space where men can engage freely, honestly, and consistently about the issues that affect them, no matter how small or huge.

He said, “It is also a safe space where men discuss their roles in stopping the scourge of GBV or their complacency in watching it take place around them. We recognize that we have a chance to reach and transform the lives of men in the country so that they can fully comprehend their biases, the hostile environments women find themselves in daily and cardinally, how through insight, we can be more aware and compassionate towards women, both at home and at work.”

Ratshefola further stated that the democratic rights women have are basic fundamental human rights and that the society will only be safe once all women feel safe 24/7.

According to Ratshefola, the manufacturing industry has a propensity of being male-dominated with outdated perceptions about women which hinders the diversity needed for an equal society, that’s why he is so passionate about resetting and engrafting a strong culture of diversity, inclusion, and the advancement of women at CCBSA.

Since the company’s inception in 2016, CCBSA took a bold step to contribute meaningfully to the country’s ideal to be an inclusive and transformed organisation. Their transformation strategy involved bold initiatives meant to increase gender parity in the company, supply chain, and to increase black ownership.”

Ratshefola said, “Since then, the company has delivered on most, if not all of its objectives, including the appointment of strong and accomplished women in critical executive and senior leadership positions in our organisation.”

The idea behind the Men of Honor initiative was to address the prejudices men have against women and many other issues that men struggle with, including their emotional well-being, health, and common concerns about the future.
