Walter Sisulu Square under attack

A place meant for development of Kliptown is being vandalised.

Facility management at Walter Sisulu Square in Kliptown is concerned about vandalism of the place meant to bring development in the area.

It all started after level 5 lock down was announced where thieves started stealing things from the square and it grew to vandalism which left the underground parking lot a mess, forcing management to close it.

Street lights and lights that were supposed to keep the place bright at night are being stolen which gives criminals time to do their criminal act and mug people.

Recently they dug up an electric cable which ended up affecting operation of centres such as the Traffic Department, Post Office and other businesses in the area.

“Pension pay-outs for elders was delayed as well as the R350 unemployment grant. People cannot collect their driver licences or write their learners tests due to the stolen cable,” said Facility manager Sifiso Khanyile.

Khanyile said the area is meant to attract other businesses to come but if vandalism continues no businesses will want to associate themselves with them, making reference to Home Affairs offices and Sassa offices.

He urged the community to help them by being the watch dogs of the area and report any criminal activity or vandalism that happens in the square.

“They should come to us as centre management and report the problem so that we can see how to end this thing because if the square is closed the community will not get any service deliveries,” concluded Khanyile.
