Auditions for ‘The Beehive’ film in Kliptown

Through this project, the company aims to build the community through story-telling, showcase local talent, to accentuate the socio-economic misfortunes that are prevalent in the Kliptown community.

Arts for Development, a newly formed company is inviting prospective and aspiring actors from Kliptown and surrounding areas to audition for parts in a new film project, titled “The Beehive” which is planned to be shot in Kliptown in October.

According to Prince Massingham, who is the writer of the film, the company was established with a vision to empower the youth with art skills and addressing social issues. “This is the second film project of AFDA, the first film project was ‘The Mattress’ that went on to be chosen by United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) for their Children’s Film Festival in Florence, Italy, The South African International Film Festival and the Dhaka International Film Festival, Bangladesh in 2019,” said Massingham.

The writer of ‘The Beehive’ film shared that Neo Monyamane is the film’s director and the film is about an urban underworld of endemic poverty, social deprivation and turmoil. “The movie is about a community with all its different puzzle pieces scattered around the township. In one household, we find a mother that neglects her two boys who have to find ways to fend for them on a daily basis.

“It examines a group of ladies gambling their monies away playing cards, where violent scenes occur. The film also explores a gangster who preys on a young girl, bribes her mother, and a street urchin that finds a fortune that changes his life for the worst. Not forgetting Aunt Sarah, the voice of reason in this anarchic space,” shared Massingham.

The company would like to have two weeks of workshops and invite interns in the following areas; camera, lighting, make-up, directing, wardrobe, and production.

Through this project, the company aims to build the community through story-telling, showcase local talent, to accentuate the socio-economic misfortunes that is prevalent in the Kliptown community, to use the film as a mirror for locals to look at themselves and instill hope in themselves, and to encourage the community, especially youth to take interest in the film industry to tell stories of their culture and heritage especially about their surroundings and where they come from while earning an income.
