The Thari Programme gives learners career 411

Equipping the youth even through the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Learners anticipating to finish their Grade 12 are certain to acquire as much information as possible about relevant careers through the Cyril Ramaphosa Foundation project known as the Thari Programme.

A big number of Matriculants from less advantaged backgrounds finish Grade 12 and leave school with little information to no information about how to continue their studies at accredited universities and colleges.

The lack of career guidance at schools results in learners completing school not understanding or mindful of the other available opportunities for them to further develop themselves.

The Thari Programme launched its annual career expo back in 2017, directly and meaningfully making an impact to at least eight schools since its inception, addressing issues affecting the South African learner by creating a framework that allows the youth to elevate itself from poverty and become independent and powerful.

Bernice Maponyane the Programmes Manager for the Adopt-a-school Foundation explained that the Programme plays a major role in igniting and sustaining learner interests, pinpointing strengths and weaknesses, she said, “The Programme helps redirect students at risk of poor outcomes and discourages dropping out of school while it also helps learners make informed and insightful decisions about their subjects of choice and paths.”

A Brown Center Chalkboard Study has shown that because of the COVID-19 Pandemic and the safety restrictions put in place this year to curb its spread, depending on the learner’s grade learners have lost out on almost an entire school term for this year and it seems like many will attend only half the school days in the second half of the year due to rotation and social distancing.

International research also showed that such learning losses could have lasting implications even stretching into the labour market.

The Thari Programme has made sure that even in 2020, during the fight against the COVID-19 Pandemic, learners get all the career information they need to soldier on and make their dreams come true because young people were not given the spirit of anxiety and confusion, but the spirit of a sound mind and love.
