Soweto entrepreneurs innovates ideas to fight Corona Virus

Bongani Morake and his Partner Bonga Skhosana innovated a device that allows you to wash and sanitize using a sensor to avoid touching.

While the pandemic has affected the economy globally, young people are becoming creative, coming up with ideas to earn a living during these trying times. Soweto’s very own young innovators, Bongani Morake and his partner, Bonga Skhosana came up with a great business idea that is meant to make a positive contribution to the fight against the Corona Virus. Since washing hands and sanitising has become a norm, they have decided to come up with a different and brilliant device idea of doing both.

“The project started back in April with the aim to assist the country in the fight against this deadly virus. We are actually a construction company, called Mate Group, but because of lockdown and its restrictions, we had to come up with something to adjust in the new ‘normal’.

“We saw that no one had a similar idea and decided to build a prototype so that we can start proposing to schools and businesses. We actually had 2 other prototypes before that one,” Morake explained.

The device uses pedals instead of having something that requires you to touch when using it.

“We have realised that touching is one of the factors increasing the spread of the virus, so using pedals is a safer option. The device has three taps which are connected to three buckets that will include Soap, sanitizer, and water,” Morake said.

The initial device was made using Pipes, buckets and melamine board, the duo has recently upgraded and the upgraded version is lighter and the material used on it allows them to print the emblem or logo of the buyer, it uses electricity and can also use batteries.

“As we all know most sanitizers have 70 to 75% alcohol which means they still leave space for the virus to roam around. So, our machine is designed to wash hands with soap and sanitize, which means the virus won’t be on your hands. We also used sensors to avoid touching,” Morake said.

“We are targeting schools, malls, office blocks, restaurants, etc. This machine is an investment because going forward, Health will be the most important part of our lives and this station will also be useful even after the pandemic,” he added.

The device according to the duo, is also designed to save water.

“The machine doesn’t wastewater as the water that you use to wash your hands goes back in the station where it cleans itself. So, we basically recycle water and fighting the virus simultaneously,” said Morake.
