1000 reusable masks donated to Soweto essential workers

South Africa continues to fight the spread of the global pandemic COVID-19.

A well-known philanthropist and businessman in the beauty industry, Peet Viljoen has distributed over 1000 reusable masks and hand sanitizers to essential workers in Soweto as the country are battling COVID-19.

To make sure that health workers have access to the best preventative measures and personal protection equipment, Tammy Taylor Nails along with Viljoen went around Soweto, handing over specialized masks to police officers and security guards who have to work.

On December 31, 2019, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported a cluster of pneumonia cases in Wuhan City, China and since then, the virus has spread to more than 100 countries including our very own South Africa.

President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the nation on July 12 and outlined the country’s response to the increasing spread of the virus and said that the country will remain on level three lockdown restrictions, obligated to wear face masks and he re-banned the selling of alcohol.

Viljoen said, “The lockdown we are experiencing in the country at the moment has shown us who the true heroes in our country are.

“The people who provide us with basic health care, breadwinners, people who put the food to the retail outlets and who make sure that shops are kept clean and decontaminated so that everybody else can have access.”

The Minister for Gauteng Department of Health, Zweli Mkhize went to the Social Cluster Media Briefing just one day after the president’s address that outlined the country’s response, Mkhize said, “Firstly, we want to assure you that in all the decisions that have been taken, there have been extensive consultations. As the president indicated, we continue to receive advice from experts but we also ensure that we consult provinces.”

Mkhize further said, “The president announced that further restrictions were being imposed under leave 3. We must accept that these are added measures for us to contain the spread of this virus.”

Viljoen said, “Everybody who is working in the front lines so that the rest of us can stay and work from home during these times should be celebrated for their dedication and commitment.”
