Miss SA 2020 Top 15: Soweto is within

Busisiwe Mmotla continues to represent in the Semi-finals.

The Top 15 beauty queens competing for the prestigious Miss South Africa 2020 crown have been announced. Gauteng has six semi-finalists, with Soweto’s very own Busisiwe Mmotla included. Mmotla said that she always dreamed of being part of Miss SA.

“This makes me feel so proud, it has been something I have wanted for a very long time but I discouraged myself for all the wrong reasons,” Mmotla said.

“Being Top 15 Miss SA for me means I am one step closer to my dream. It means that now I can have access to the different resources I did not have access to when I was Miss Soweto. For me the crown is an opportunity not just for me but for the community of Soweto this is why all the campaigns I want to get involved in will in the long run affect positive change in Soweto and surrounding areas,” she added.

Mmotla hails from Soweto, Emdeni, she was in 2017 crowned Miss Soweto and has since proved to be a community orientated beauty queen. She is willing to bring a positive change to young people in Soweto.

“I think more importantly Soweto needs someone to hear them out, especially the young people so I am going to bring a listening ear. Currently many young people especially my learners complain about how it is hard to access certain resources such as data and airtime to do research and school work because those items are so expensive and seem a world away from them. I will take all the information I get from the community and find someone who will help me try and change the current situation,” she said.

Mmotla is a Senior & FET Phase teacher who graduated from the University of Johannesburg (UJ) in 2017 with a Bachelor of Education degree and she says that her learners are her biggest supports.

“I feel like the learners are my biggest supporters. They cannot stop treating me like I have won the title already. Most of them have recently started labeling me as a role model and I think this shows you the power that the Miss SA platform holds,” she said.

“Representation is so important especially to the people who come from underprivileged communities and or the minority and me making it to the Top 15 has given these learners an opportunity to visualise their dreams and know it is possible and that is the power of representation,” she added.

Asked what she thought it takes to be crowned Miss SA, Mmotla said:

“I think it takes a lot of courage. I say this because the title is not just glitz and glamour. My time as Miss Soweto opened me up to a portion of experiences as to what it means to be a titleholder. Being a crown holder means one has to have courage, courage to listen to heartbreaking stories about women and children who are abused and have stories you can never imagine.

“Then after hearing those stories build more courage to go and knock on big doors of big corporations and donors to ask for huge amounts of resources to help you do CSI activities to help those families. So, the Miss SA title needs one to be courageous and resourceful yet still self-effacing in all the good work you do. Remember also Miss SA is a job and one needs to have the experience to help them make it work.”

The Top 15 was introduced by the reigning Miss South Africa, Sasha-Lee Olivier, in a virtual public reveal. The public now has the chance to vote to ensure that their favourite contestant progresses to the finale which is scheduled to take place in the last quarter of the year.
