June 16 2020 to be celebrated differently at Vilakazi Street

The Box Shop Lifestyle in partnership with Soweto Surf, has something exciting planned for youth online this Youth Day.

You are probably trying to come to terms with the fact that we won’t be able to celebrate Youth Day like we are used to, relax, a Soweto based youth movement #We Uprising powered by The Box Shop Lifestyle at Vilakazi Street in partnership with Soweto Surf, has something exciting for you this June 16, they will be hosting their annual commemoration under the campaign theme #June16Imbizo.

Although this year it will be celebrated differently, which will be strictly online, participants can look forward to a jam-packed day of activities scheduled to start from the morning via a solidarity virtual walk & commemoration activity, followed by sober online discussions from about lunchtime to mid-afternoon, then a special lockdown entertainment show will follow immediately afterwards to end the day’s activities.

“We have a duty and responsibility to engage and inspire young people during good times and challenging times. due to the pandemic, we had to rethink our entire event program on the day and we explored digital channels and creative ways of continuing to commemorate the heroes of ‘76 in a safe, meaningful, and entertaining way,” said Mbali Zulu, project director and founder of the #WeUprising movement.

Social media users are encouraged to participate in meaningful conversations about; equality, empowerment, advancing our country through entrepreneurship, and just fresh ideas to fuel an economic revolution in South Africa and across the continent under this hashtag.

An official #June16Imbizo event invitation has been sent out by the #WeUprising movement on Facebook with The Box Shop Lifestyle as co-hosts.

An awareness campaign driven by a series of video footage of young people expressing their democratic truths and providing solutions to actions that need to be taken for young people in the townships to succeed, has been launched on social media.

Vilakazi Street is without a doubt the heartbeat of national Youth-Day celebrations in South Africa and in the past 4 years, Youth Day celebrations on this historical street have been highlighted by an annual family friendly food market initiated by The Box Shop Lifestyle.

This initiative serves as a direct empowering platform for young local entrepreneurs to gain access to an international market. “Following our successful partnership with the organizers of the #We Uprising movement last year, we identified the need to create a new tourism program and established a tourism vision that incorporates local businesses and organizations via a private-public-community model that aims to PROMOTE an inclusive economical drive that promote the township and its businesses as an investment jewels and destination for locals and those who comes from afar, through a unified destination experience,” reveals Sifiso Moyo, co-founder of The Box Shop.

Although the COVID19 pandemic has kind of stifled their plan for June 16 ,2020 activities, it has also forced them to rethink their role as the Brand in this new normal, pivoting the urgency for them to develop technological tools like the June 16Xperience app to be ready in 2021.

The app promises users a wonderful booking experience, allowing participants to secure table bookings and make advance payments to support the local economy and savour a beautiful winter’s day in an incredible township location.

“We had initially planned to introduce our new tourism-friendly package this year to kickstart our 10-year program, as our special way to commemorate Youth-Day. But the pandemic has forced us to postpone our launch to next year.

“We want to encourage everyone to celebrate this special day with us from the safety and comfort of their homes this year. Let us use this time to reflect and seek practical solutions to our socio-economic issues,” Moyo concludes.
