Games set to honour late political activist

Barney “Buda” Molokoane to be honoured.

The City of Johannesburg’s Sports and Recreation in Region D and the Ward 21 community in Tladi and Moletsane are hosting this year’s annual Barney Molokoane Community Games.

The games have already started and are taking place at the revamped Moletsane Sports Complex.

The finals will be held on December 16. Ward Councillor, Mahlomola Kekana said at the launch which was hosted at Soweto Theatre that hosting of the games will teach the youth the values such as bravery, commitment and discipline.

The tournament is formed to honour the late political activist, Barney “Buda” Molokoane.

About 1 000 players from Tladi and Moletsane take part in various games of the competition including basketball, soccer, netball, volleyball, tennis, indigenous games, cycling and others.

Sport legends and the Soweto Sport Council will host coaching clinics during the event.

This refurbished Moletsane Sport Complex now boasts the new-looking basketball court, tennis, handball, netball, volley ball courts and a soccer field and there will be no need for other teams to play at other venues.

Former Bloemfontein Celtic player, Kennedy Makara who is now with the Johannesburg Legends said they came together as legends to work with the City of Joburg and local councillors in order to unearth talent in the townships.

Games are still continuing a the complex.
