Road users urged to obey road rules

JMPD to roll out a number of road safety initiatives.

Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) will be working tirelessly this festive period in encouraging motorists to be accountable when driving, since the roads will be very busy.

As usual, JMPD will be rolling out a number of road safety initiatives.

Spokesperson Edna Mamonyane said motorists who disobey road rules will be punished.

She said safety is their first priority and that the purpose of all the initiatives the department launches is to raise awareness about drunk driving and the risks that comes with it.

Over the years, campaigns like Operation Futha and Operation Thiba were launched as part of the National Rolling Enforcement Plan.

Operation Futha was intended to diminish the number of drunken drivers on the roads; whereas Operation Thiba was aimed at creating a safe driving environment for all.

“Joburg is the heart of Africa and people visit this land to share the experience.

She said: “During the holidays, people from other provinces travel to the Gauteng for leisure and some business”.

Mamonyane said this often leads to heavy traffic jams on the road and that vehicles that are not in a good condition can block roads because of car faults.

“We urge people to drive responsibly and to respect other road users by simply abiding by the rules,” said Mamonyane.
