Mass march for electricity in Orlando, Soweto

A flat rate of R150 demanded for each household.

Sowetans met in numbers  in Orlando West to embark on a march to the Eskom offices in Depkloof to get answers about the ongoing electricity crisis faced by the country which led to the hashtag persuasion campaign #SowetoShutdown and to demand a flat rate of R150 per household.

The chairperson of the South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) Thomas Thage assert that people lives are lost due to illegal connections which he blames to the high electricity prices.


Load Shedding one of the issues driving the march.

“A flat rate of R150 per household per month is necessary  in order to assist Eskom from their ongoing financial crisis.” he said.

He alluded that Eskom must give them certain WAT’s for free.

Reginal secretary of Johannesburg Dada Morero said that  it is unacceptable for people to stay months without power.

“We will march everyday to Eskom till our issues are resolved.”

Mayor of Johannesburg Geory Makhubo marched in solidarity with Soweto councillors and residents.
