The Meadowlands community marched to the Meadowlands SAPS seeking answers about a rape case

“What I want to understand is why he was not arrested?” - Wendy Motsisi.

Meadowlands residents along with the Soweto Action Committee marched to the Meadowlands SAPS to express their dissatisfaction with the Meadowlands police after an alleged attempted rape suspect molested a 13-year-old.

This follows after a different case had been reported with Dobsonville SAPS against the same alleged perpetrator.

Wendy Motsisi said she had to come out when she heard about the 13-year-old because the alleged perpetrator attempted to rape her in November last year.

She said she reported the case to the police in Meadowlands.

“I came here to complain about the police attitude when I went to report the matter, and not being kept in the loop as to why the guy was not arrested,” she added.

“He has been given a warning statement and what I want to understand is why he was not arrested because following my case he went on to sexually assault a child.

“I was sitting back waiting for my case to pen out while someone became a victim,” said Motsisi.

Sergeant Octavia Thebe stated that she is responding to the attempted rape case as they cannot get hold of Dobsonville which had the attempted rape case. She states that the case is still on-going and that the investigation officer has been communicating with the victim.

“The victim is meeting with the prosecutor on Thursday for the decision, the case went to court that is why they arranged for the victim to meet with the prosecutor at court on Thursday,” said Thebe.

Secretary-General of Soweto Action Committee, Lerato Mogapi said they are shocked but not surprised because they know the system does not cater to the poor and they are aware that SAPS is full of corruption.

“Know that the poor of the poorest are not protected by SAPS and what is interesting is that when we as community members protest, do picketing and march they will come out in numbers to arrest the community leaders and shoot at us.

“They will even go the extra mile to include the community but when it comes to cases like this they are nowhere to be found to protect women and children,” said Mogapi.
