UPDATE: February 12, 2020 @09:40

Yesterday Ward 37 residents barricaded roads with burning tyres, stones and trees at Crossroad, Klipvalley, Nancefield and Number One Office.

Residents brought morning traffic to a standstill  following protests calling for Councillor Ntombizodwa Nxumalo to vacate office citing due to poor service delivery.

Nxumalo has been on the helm for twenty decades, residents say they will not stop protesting until the Ward Councillor steps down.

One of the residents who took part in the protest Ntsokai Duze said they are not fighting for electricity. “We are fighting because we don’t want Zodwa Nxumalo as our councillor anymore, 20 years in service but White City is still the same White City we grew up in.”

“We felt that our cries are not being attended to, we had a person coming from mayor’s office promising us that they will look in to our cries,” she continued.

“For the time when they came here we stopped protesting we waited for them like they said we should so all we want from the mayor’s office is for them to keep their promise. If they could not come back with whatever that they promised us they must still come back and give us feedback,” added Duze.

In response to calls for her resignation, Ward 37 Councillor Nxumalo said she cannot answer for something she does not understand. She said there are structures in place which were supposed to be contacted with concerns that the people have.

“I am not certain how to respond if people want me to resign in three days with unfounded allegations if they have allegations they have to have proof of what they are talking about, she added.

“As far as I am consent, the allegations are not based on service delivery but they are based on something else,” said Nxumalo.

Nxumalo further said the African National Congress (ANC) knows what needs to be done and that the matter is in their hands, she said she cannot tell as from now what they are they going to do.
