‘Save The Boy Child’ strengthening the capacity of young boys to deal with life challenges

A boy child matters too.

What a great initiative, a non-profit organisation in Pimville, called Save The Boy Child has launched a programme which aims to strengthen the capacity of young boys to deal with life challenges, make them independent, build their self-esteem and in doing so minimise risky behaviours that expose them to drugs, alcohol abuse, crime, gangsterism, female abuse and other anomalies that includes the possibility of teenage pregnancy.

With social dysfunctions being disturbingly prevalent in our country, boys need active guidance to help them make positive contributions to society.

Love Life in partnership with the Gauteng Department of Social Development hosted a Boy Child Summit in Boksburg on Tuesday, August 20 where like-minded non- profit organisations and NGO’s working in the development sectors targeting a boy child gathered to discuss ways in which they can collaborate in order to develop and implement programmes that are geared towards advocating and empowering a boy child and the Save The Boy Child organisation was part of this summit.

The keynote speaker at this event was the Deputy Minister of the Department of Social Development, Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu speaking at the event. who made emphasis on the fact that young boys need positive role models and parents should play a bigger role.

She also mentioned that she has been engaging with a lot of young boys through some of the programmes they have as the department and what she said what she has picked up is that, the society is playing a major role in this problem.

“I want to say to all of you, we know what the problem is in this country and we don’t have to spend government money trying to solve it, we even have solutions on what is it that we have to do, so let’s get on with the work, let us hold each other accountable and that starts in your own home, it starts in your community,” she said.

The Boy Child Summit aims to form a network of organisations that will ensure the development of a boy child as well as lobby other government departments the private and sector civil society organisations to invest in young men.

The summit discussed widely accepted gender norms that place men, in general, in a dominant position compared to women in the public and private spheres.
