Nomzamo residents in Orlando East marched to Eskom over outage frustrations

Eskom says the reason why Nomzamo community is experiencing outages is due to illegal connections.

On Monday, June 24, Nomzamo Community residents near Orlando East marched to Diepkloof Eskom Customer Service to raise their grievances over electricity outages that have been going on for four weeks now.

When at Eskom, these residents were tended to by the station representative who then addressed the main cause of these outages which is the burst of a transformer, due to illegal connections done by some residents who supply power cables to residents in shacks, he also added that even if the transformer was to be fixed that day it would explode again.

The representative also revealed that the main reason why Eskom hasn’t resolved this issue at Nomzamo is that most residents don’t buy electricity and therefore has reached the decision to conduct an audit to houses that buy electricity and those that don’t.

Those who are not buying will be fined an amount of R6 052 after this audit then all the necessary steps to retaining a smooth power supply will be taken. However, residents were against this decision by Eskom saying the audit will take forever and they need electricity promptly.

Councillor Setchaba Khumalo was among the Nomzamo residents.

When commenting on Monday morning march, he said “The seniors of Eskom have made a commitment a long time ago even before the local government elections some two and a half years ago, saying they will seek budget to upgrade Nomzamo electricity supply to a 60 voltage, which has never happened. Another problem is that families are expanding and shacks as well. These people need electricity.”

Khumalo also urged Nomzamo residents to comply with Eskom in order to ensure that these audits are a success

“We urge community members, especially those who have connected illegally to do the right thing because these illegal connections are affecting many residents.” Khumalo concluded.
