Protea Glen learners fight violence against women and children

The campaign was inspired by the tragic event of a Mpumalanga woman.

The 2018 crime statistics have proven there is a rise in the murders against women and children. Learners at Glen Ridge Primary School at Protea Glen extension 16 together with Bongani Community Development Centre (BCDC) held an awareness campaign against the killing of children at the school last Saturday.

The campaign was inspired by the tragic event of a Mpumalanga woman killing her four children which dominated headlines last month.

“We are very saddened about the tragedies that are taking place in our country hence we are making people aware of the violence our children are facing and telling people to stop killing children,” said Bongani Mthombeni, event organiser and chairperson of BCDC.

BCDC works with underprivileged children, youth and senior citizens at Glen Ridge low cost houses. BCDC helps all vulnerable and at risk children, including children affected by poverty, conflict and HIV / AIDS.

They provide food parcels to the needy by the help of sponsors like Nashua Children Charity Foundation, Helen Fraser and Nkosi’s Haven. It is very sad to see children getting kidnapped, raped, killed and abused almost every day. The future generation is getting killed for no valid reasons.

A rational approach to reducing the number of killings taking place is not just about stopping the unnecessary killings but helping the children thrive for their future.

Miss Holy Bible 2018, Tondani Nemadevhele (13), said they are tired of living in fear not knowing who will be attacked, killed or raped.

Children’s killing is wrong and it is an unacceptable crime, they are killing our future generation, in years to come South Africa will have no leaders due to the fact that future leaders are being killed.

The community and a country as a whole need to build a healthy and safe living conditions for the children, have security measures that will ensure that children are safe at all times.

Apostle Juliet Taunyane, whom together with her Bible scholars support the initiative said, “It can only be through God and prayer that our land gets delivered and saved, the word of God teaches us if we call upon God then he is able to hear from heaven and heal our land.”
