Meadowlands residents form patrol team to discourage illegal dumping

What a stench!

Meadowlands Zone 7 residents are unhappy with a nearby dumpsite, citing health concerns and a foul smell which they fear will intensify during the summer months.

This has been an ongoing problem which has plagued residents to the extent that they approached their local councillor to seek a solution to the problem.

A resident, William Mahapa said, “This is a health hazard and people suffer from different diseases so we would appreciate it if the councillor could assist us in cleaning this place.

“We know that we also contribute as some residents dispose of their waste here and are oblivious of the harm it can cause people.”

Mahapa decried the seeming lack of concern for the environment, saying that the general perception is that, as long as the waste is not in their yards, even though they were issued rubbish bins by Pikitup, they still prefer dumping in the field, forgetting the health risks this poses.

Oupa Monnagotla said, this worried her so much because thugs would take advantage and hide there, so he decided to patrol every morning just to make sure that anyone going to work is safe.

A few residents have started patrolling the area to discourage residents from dumping. Thabang Sola, who conducts daily patrols, said, “I don’t patrol alone. I do this job with my dog Buccaneer and the community appreciates it.”

He added that the open field could be turned into a mini-park, as children have to cross the busy road to go and play where they feel safe.

“This is also an opportunity for the community to turn that space into a place where everyone can relax and read their newspaper to ease their minds,” said Sola.

Ward 43 councillor Happyboy Molobye said, “Every now and then there are cleanup campaigns which are conducted. The problem is that illegal dumpers return to the area after dark to litter.”

“I am aware of the field, but we all need to take responsibility and work together in making sure that this place is cleaned for everyone, especially in this hot weather,” said Molobye.
