Kwaito muso honours legend in latest offering

Carrying on the kwaito legacy.

Batine Ngubani is a kwaito musician who has been on the local music scene for a number of years. He discovered his love for music in the 90’s when the music genre had South Africans of all races stomping their feet to this relatively new sound.

The muso remembers forming a group called Ace with a few of his friends, which was disbanded after a few misunderstandings. He cites his uncle as a major influence and recalled how he would him playing his guitar. It was this which acted as the catalyst for his love for producing music.

His friendship with well-known kwaito legend, Spikiri who he credits with showing him the ropes and teaching him more about the industry. During this period, he learnt more about the dance aspect of kwaito and had several stints as a backup singer for other artists.



“My uncle was my biggest mentor at the time because I looked up to him and drew inspiration from his guitar playing,” said Ngubani.

He also featured on a number of songs composed by another local legend, Senyaka who he continued to collaborate with until the hitmaker’s death.

“Thula ‘Senyaka’ Kekana took me under his wing and we accomplished so many things together on our musical journey,” he added.

The kwaito aficionado has also opened his own production company, Bade Productions and uses his home as a studio which is where his latest Extended Play (EP) was released from.

On his journey in the music industry, Ngubani has formed partnerships with a number of notable artists and said, “We also tried forming a group known as Amajita which was not successful, because everyone parted ways. I decided to stick with Senyaka who helped me release my own album.”


This outfit is known to be for people who love kwaito music and pantsula dance-Batine Ngubani.

The artist has just composed a song titled Sophia to honour Senyaka, who he said he would always remember for being such a great influence on his music. The song features local artists and Podium Zone who are helping him with the distribution of his new album.

As a parting shot, he said, “Senyaka had a positive impact on me and his guidance and advice to steer away from drugs have been invaluable.”
