15 adults given an opportunity to complete their ASC
Another chance to obtain that certificate.
Media Works has offered 15 adults an opportunity to complete their Amended Senior Certificate (ASC) for free.
The competition, #Matric4Madiba, was run by South Africa’s leading provider of adult education and training and was run nationwide to give an opportunity to those people who could not complete matric and of Media Works co-founder Jackie Carroll said, “We received 200 applications through Facebook and winners ranged from 22 to 40 years old.
“In South Africa, a matric certificate is a passport to a better future. It’s what you need to gain access to improved employment opportunities, and it’s the basic qualification you need to study further. We are excited to be able to change lives through this competition,” said Carroll.
About 15 adults who could not complete their secondary education due to financial constraints or other circumstances were selected. Through Matric Works, they will be able to study towards their nationally recognised ASC, a qualification equivalent to matric.
One of the winners Hilda Mopedi, a 32-year-old Soweton, suffered a kidney infection while she was writing matric in 2003. She was only able to write three subjects before being hospitalised and didn’t pass her remaining exams.
“I now realise how important it is to have a matric certificate and I have been trying unsuccessfully to apply for work. The first question employers ask is have you completed your matric,” said Mopedi.

Another winner, 40-year-old Tumisane Ntenge is a father of two boys and he said, “During my matric, I failed two subjects which I still need to complete.”
“I would like to be an example to my family and inspire them that no matter how old you are, education is and will always be the key to success,” said Ntenge.
Carroll explained that the winners will have access to all the subjects of their choice. Whether they need to complete just one or all six subjects. Winners will be supplied with quality course material, presented to them through best practice online learning methodologies.
“Matric Works learners can study anytime, anywhere and at their own pace while enjoying constant support,” said Carroll.
The Star Schools project manager Tharef Khan, said they will also be offering free revision sessions to help winners prepare for their English, mathematics, physical science and life science exams.
“At Star Schools, we are on a mission to open doors of opportunity to those we empower. The #Matric4Madiba giveaway enables us to help individuals uplift themselves and to give them a second chance at changing their futures,” said Khan.
Carroll concluded, “This initiative was inspired by Mandela’s belief in the power of education to transform the lives of individuals, families, communities and societies. In this way, Media Works and Star Schools are proud to be taking Mandela’s legacy forward.”
