Open power substation shocking news for residents

"Any death is one death too many and Eskom promotes zero harm at all times," said Nkosana Sibuyi.

Children living in Dobsonville on Ledwaba Street are facing the ever-present threat of being electrocuted and killed before they reach adulthood because of a substation door which residents say was left open by Eskom fieldworkers.

The palisade fencing surrounding the substation is broken and the gate is also wide open. A resident, Mathews Mongale said the substation has been opened for over nine months now and added that it was fortunate that no deaths due to electrocution have been reported yet.

He said, “Children are inquisitive, one day they will enter the substation and fiddle with the electrical cabling. They will get electrocuted and died because of negligence.”

He said that a few months ago, electrical cables were stolen which caused a blackout in Dobsonville. Mongale added that Eskom officials confirmed that the blackout happened as a result of cables stolen from the substation which has been left wide open.

“We voted this government into power so that it should serve us well, we will not blame the previous administration for the government of today’s failures,” said Mongale.

Eskom Gauteng spokesperson, Nkosana Sibuyi said that during August, they were promoting safety for both the public and their workers.

“We encourage people to desist from illegal electrical connections or tampering with our infrastructure. As to the matter of the open substation in Ledwaba Street, we will assign our field workers in the area to close the door to the substation. Any death is one death too many and Eskom promotes zero harm at all times,” said Sibuyi.
