Soweto TV shines at the Gauteng Sports Awards

It was a night to remember as it brought together stars from across Gauteng as guests of MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Faith Mazibuko.

Soweto’s local television and South Africa’s first community TV station, Soweto TV, took home two awards after being awarded the community media of the year and had its sports programme, Dlala Mzansi, being crowned the Sports Programme of the year at the glitzy sports event, the 8th annual Gauteng Sports Awards held at the Silverstar Casino in Mogale City on Sunday, September 2.

Protea’s cricketer Kagiso Rabada was one of the big winners on the night, as he scooped the Sportsman of the Year award for the second time in two years.

Following her consistent performance for Banyana Banyana, Refiloe Jane, who recently signed a contract to ply her trade in Australia, also walked away with the Sportswoman of the Year award.

It was a night to remember as it brought together stars from across Gauteng as guests of MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Faith Mazibuko.

“This was truly a spectacular evening of celebrating sporting excellence in the Gauteng Province, the home of champions. It is such a tremendous honour to have been able to recognise those who have performed so well, have shared our stories of success and have developed up and coming talent in the past year,” said MEC Mazibuko.

“Congratulations to all the winners. As we celebrate the centenary of Nelson Mandela and Albertina Sisulu, the iconic revolutionaries of our nation who were avid athletes themselves and believed in the power of sport. We continue to inspire the youth through their legacies,” she added.

Launched under the theme ‘Celebrating Excellence, Inspiring the Youth’, this year’s awards ceremony celebrated the centenary of former President Nelson Mandela, as well as Albertina Sisulu, both of whom were actively and avidly involved in boxing and tennis, respectively.

As part of the evening’s entertainment, stand-out performances by the likes of Boom Shaka and Sho Majozi left guests on their feet and ensured a night for the ages.
