Body recovered in Klip River after last week’s drowning

"We further request that parents take extra precautions to reduce the risks of drownings."

In a statement released by Kliptown SAPS, it is alleged that on August 3 at about 2 pm, police responded to a call from a resident who alerted them of a possible drowning after four children were spotted swimming in the Klip River along Dlamini Road, Freedom Charter Square.

Police believe that the children were between the ages of one to four years old. It’s further alleged that the children were unsupervised by their parents when a one-year-eight-month baby drowned in the river.

A police water wing rescue team, JHB EMS and the SAPS air wing have been searching since then, but fortunately, yesterday at approximately 1.30 pm.

The rescue teams mentioned managed to find the body believed to be the one that drowned. An inquest docket was opened for further investigations.

Soweto East Cluster Corporate Communication officer Captain Hitler Ngwenya applauded the dedication and fidelity of the SAPS water, air wing in collaboration with the Gauteng EMS and other stakeholders that were involved in search and eventually found the body.

“We further request that parents take extra precautions to reduce the risks of drownings by supervising their children around the water at all times, especially along the Klipriver,” said Ngwenya.
