WATCH: Brother and sister make a clean sweep

"Life has not been easy for us, but we try with the little that we have."

When you’re in Kliptown, it’s like you’re in another world- a world many have forgotten. With the unemployment rate in the area extremely high, residents find it difficult to remain motivated because for many years now-even decades-the area has been poverty stricken.

Siblings Khanyisile and Zolile Madikizela, number among the very few who are motivated and try to put food on the table by making brooms and selling them to anyone who is interested.

“Our mother was a very talented lady, she taught us how to make brooms, she made them in order to feed us.

“When she became sick and passed, away things became more difficult for us but we knew we had to continue her legacy or else we would not be able to make ends meet, let alone eat,” said 23-year-old Kanyisile Madikizela.

“Life has not been easy for us, but we try with the little that we have,” she added.

Kanyisile, her daughter and her brother live in a shack in Kliptown but remain hopeful that things will turn around one day for them.

The talented Madikizela siblings are able to make thatched brooms from scratch in less than 15 minutes.

Zolile travels to town to sell the brooms but cannot afford to travel every day because he doesn’t always manage to sell all the brooms.

“We are appealing to the community to buy our brooms so we can try to live a slightly better life, it is honest money we are trying to make, we are selling the brooms for only R25.00,” said Zolile.

The Eldorado Urban reporter recorded the siblings making a broom. To place orders, contact Khanyisile on 078 028 4031.
