Mofolo-Murder: ‘Gender based violence and murder are the same thing’ – Patrick Shai

"Gender-Based-Violence is never the fault of the victim" - Patrick Shai.

Speaking at Nomsa’s memorial service, Patrick Shai, who is the founder on an organisation that helps abusive men to fight gender-based violence [Khuluma Ndoda], said he has spoken at many events against gender-based violence but it seems like he is speaking to rocks.

He emphasised that gender-based violence is murder and we should not even be giving it ‘glorified’ names by calling it femicide.

He said that it started from the smallest things, from the point a man points at you and utter violent words.

“It didn’t only start now, it was an acceleration of events and it did not even begin with beating her up, it started with a man pointing at a woman, saying ‘hey wena’, ” Shai said.

He also said that we must stop blaming the victim or the victim’s parents but the perpetrator’s parents for raising a ‘monster’.
