Has illegal dumping become a normal activity?

Dumping poses a health hazard.


Although Pikitup works tirelessly to ensure that our communities are kept clean at all times. Several communities still battle with keeping their space clean which has become South Africa’s biggest challenge.

Environmental pollution cannot be ignored as people fear only to dump in their areas and prefer to go to a nearby community.

Several workshops were held by Pikitup to address the issue of illegal dumping in different communities but the problem seems to be continuing. People feel as if dumping is illegal only in their area.



Imagine how difficult it is to live near a dumping site, all the bad smell, and flies that enter your house. How do you prepare a healthy meal when you know that flies will be all over your food?

People living near places where people dump their waste are prone to all kind of diseases namely malaria, Cholera, and diarrhoea.

Open spaces and parks are used as dumping areas which include places that were meant to be recreational facilities and then they complain of development.



On the community of ward 30 in Orlando East embarked on a project to do damage control at corner Masupa and Adams.

It is up to community members to ensure that their communities are kept clean at all time to avoid getting different diseases that are caused by living in a filthy environment.


Recently in Albertina Sisulu Centre the community members were taught about the dangers of dumping and were urged to report anyone who is seen committing this illegal act.


Illegal dumping courses a health hazard, contaminate the environment and is poisonous to plants and water.
