Eskom split metering a nightmare for Pimville residents

#ProtestAction: Angry Pimville residents took to the streets today over Eskom.

A protest action dubbed ‘Soweto Total Shutdown’  brought Pimville Zone 3 to a standstill this morning as demonstrators expressed their frustrations against Eskom’s new split metering prepaid system.

There are mixed emotions and claims by some residents that Eskom is inconveniencing them because of allegedly not converting all households simultaneously from conventional to prepaid.

“There are still some Pimville residents who are not yet on prepaid – that are still using conventional, which is not fair for those who have switched-ova,” said Theo Ramphela.

Others demand by protesters include; the need for a flat rate and also immediate activation of the so-called Free Basic Electricity [FBE] which is for pensioners and unemployed people who cannot afford to buy prepaid electricity [residents say Eskom promised].

The irate protesters were using oil, tyres, petrol bombs and other weaponry during the protest. South African Police Service (SAPS) was present to monitor the situation.

Rubber bullets were heard fired to a group of protesters who were seemingly spotted vandalising property.

Update to follow as soon as we receive a response from Eskom.
