Taxi violence flares up in Eldos, leaves commuters stranded

Reports of running gun battles have passengers fearing for their lives.

Eldorado Park commuters today woke up to long queues and taxis passing them without stopping to collect passengers. This is a double blow for Eldos residents as the Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transit System are entering the seventh day of striking.

What this means for the working man in Eldorado Park is that there is no transport available to ferry them to and from work. Speculation is rife that tensions between the Eldorado Park Taxi Association and the Baragwanath Taxi Association, which has been brewing since the shooting death of an Eldos taxi driver in Selby last week.

According to unconfirmed reports, gunshots were fired last night between the two rival taxi association.

The South African Police Service were out and about in Eldorado Park this morning, as a number of Eldos taxis were parked along the Main Road in Extension Three.

Last year, hostilities between the two associations resulted in running gun battles and commuters feared for their lives as the bullets whizzed by.

Many passengers feel that a concrete solution has to be found before the situation escalates and have taken to social media platforms like Facebook to express their outrage at being placed squarely at the centre of a battle between the two associations.

The centre of the feuding is not clear yet and attempts by the Eldorado Urban News reporter to contact the Eldorado Park Taxi Association for comment have been unsuccessful. We will provide updates as more information is provided.
