Libraries are the heart of the community

More to reading than just the words.

Jabavu Library hosted a library week to let learners or individuals know how barriers can assist, provide them with information that they really need to know.

It is known that young people don’t really read or visit libraries more often and some of them are not exposed to a library due to that they don’t know much about the library even though some school have libraries and some of those facilities at schools are turned to staff rooms for teachers and that eradicates the power of learners to go spend time in a public library.

The Jabavu library has free Wi-Fi that you can get access by using gadgets from smartphones to laptops. Now the thing is a number of young people come to the libraries for the wrong reasons.

Libraries are doing their best to help the community so that they can get all the help they need. The only thing is that community need more of awareness about libraries.

Sello Mabaso said, “I feel that they wanted to know how learner and the community use their public library and referring to the topic given ‘libraries is the heart of the community’ this means that a number of people visit libraries for several reasons, for example, Rosa Park Library, has American history, references and few of South African history. Pupils who are at their teeth grade can use the library and it has access to the free internet from computers.”

Puseletso Lefakane said, “I was part of the debate where the motion was ‘libraries are the heart of the community’, therefore during the debate, I was able to realize the importance of libraries.

“I have learned that they are more to just libraries but still more websites that are for books. What I carried in the library is that ‘A reading nation is a leading nation’.”

“People who are not using libraries are missing out a lot of information and not only information from books but information about their surroundings and environment. I will advise my peers to visit libraries more often because with libraries they can get a lot of education and information to use in their everyday life.”
