Police arrest woman in alleged housing scam

Bogus house agent busted.

A 61-year-old woman at the centre of an alleged housing scam escaped a mob justice attack in Bramfischerville last Monday at about 4 pm.

The woman and her two accomplices were accused by residents of trying to evict a family in the area illegally.

The community was alerted and gathered to prevent the eviction. The woman’s two male accomplices fled but the 61-year-old was cornered by residents.

Dobsonville police spokesperson, constable Mzwakhe Xazi said, “Police were alerted and rushed to the scene where they managed to stop what would have escalated into a mob justice if they arrived there a moment later.

“The woman was taken into custody by the police and a manhunt has been launched for the two male suspects.”

Xazi said the woman has already appeared before the Roodepoort Magistrate Court and the case has been postponed while investigations into the illegal eviction continue.

He warned residents about bogus house agents operating within Soweto, selling people’s houses without their consent.

“We have received several reports of illegal evictions and the selling of people’s properties without their consent,” said Xazi.
